Hopefully this will be the beginning of the slippery slope cited by leading Australian lawyers acting for animal welfare reform in Australia and the world. Animal cruelty and exploitation must cease. Cultural traditions are no excuse for cruelty otherwise why not bring back gladiatorial contests? Animals are exploited and abused everywhere and not one of them needs to be. The victory for jumps horses is just the thin edge of a massive wedge. Meat production contributes more to global warming and greenhouse emissions than the entire world transport sector combined. Yet agriculture is exempted from the ETS. We are either going to get serious about saving the planet or we are going to go under by bowing our collective knees to greed and big corporations who want their exploitative, unsustainable industries to continue. It takes 1000 glasses of water to produce 1 cup of milk. And milk causes osteoporosis and cancer and obesity etc. It’s not healthy at all but the industry promotes that it is. Similarly jumps racing contributes to gambling. Fortunately there are caring humans who have made the connection between the expoitation of animals and the unhealthy consequences to humans.

The fact that many humans close their ears to the truth doesn’t alter that truth. Animal activists are acting to save animals and humans, and the planet as a result. If those who bag animal activists actually sat down and looked at hard facts they would realise these men and women are not tree hugging hippies but people concerned with the health and welfare of all. I am involved in health care. I previously worked in the racing industry and witnessed abuse of horses, illegal drugs being administered, crippled horses being trained. Horses raced before they are fully developed as 4-6 year olds should be banned.

The industry hides the abuses, much like the meat industry and battery hen industry hides heir abuses. Animal Activists expose the abuse and make the abuse public knowledge. Most of the public finds cruelty abhorrent. If these industries want to survive in any form they will need to reform. They would get a lot better PR if they did it voluntarily rather than fighting it every step of the way.
